I'm only 20 pages into this, and I'm going to give it 30 more to hook me, but the writing is bad. It's not terrible, but it's definitely not good. The story isn't interesting enough to keep me reading if the quality of writing is the same for the entire book.
It's disappointing because I like several of Johnson's other books (namely The Shades of London series and The Little Blue Envelope series) but not totally unexpected. Contemporary YA novels are really hit or miss for me.
ETA: Hit page 50 and the book got WORSE. So the guest comes and she's wearing a kimono-like top which Scarlett then compares to clothes she's seen in Chinatown. Ugh. Super annoying (especially with the rise of the trend of white people making/wearing ugly loose cardigans and calling them kimono). DNF.
