My Basmati Bat Mitzvah

My Basmati Bat Mitzvah - Paula J. Freedman

I was enjoying My Basmati Bat Mitzvah* (especially the robotics club) until I hit this gem, "I wasn't even the only Asian kid in my Hebrew school. Well, Asian-looking--Adam Greenspan was adopted, so it's not as if either of his parents is Asian."

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? Just because a kid is adopted by non-Asian Jewish people doesn't mean he isn't Asian. Ew. No. Stop.

ETA: I also find it really gross that this comment comes from Tara who is biracial and whose own identity is called into question by others. When sentiments like this towards PoC come from PoC (characters, written by a white author... it's complicated) it's even grosser.

I fought the urge to chuck the book across the room (it's a library book after all). Now, this alone wouldn't normally be enough to make me rage quit a book, but it was preceded by three more instances that annoyed me (in four pages), and that fourth "Asian-looking" comment was just my breaking point.

*OK, I was enjoying it-ish. There's this weird hair touching scene at the beginning and a whole paragraph full of "he was like and I was like" etc. which is how people talk, but not what I want to read. And the kids don't sound like kids to me. They're supposed to be 11/12, but could have been in high school and I wouldn't have known the difference.
