I wanted to like this book, but there's too much in it that I object to starting with the "wooden Indians" moving onto "Bapa Raja" (I cannot find any origin for this term... maybe it's Indonesian? Maybe it's Sri Lankan?) the onto the "land of the lotus-eaters" (according to Wikipedia this may be Libya, but in the picture there's a Cafe Djerba which maybe points to the island of Djerba).
Debbie Reese has written about the inclusion of the wooden Indians. The rest just seems to be made up "exotic" nonsense to represent "faraway places." The land Miss Rumphius comes from isn't specified and neither is the place she eventually settles, but there's nothing weird and made up either. If Cooney would have just put a little more work into her settings, all this could have been avoided and the book would have been much more enjoyable.
