I'm familiar with a fair number of Sherlock Holmes adaptations (mostly newer ones I will admit). Pop culture has had such a heavy hand in shaping my idea of Sherlock Holmes. It's interesting reading the source material and seeing where the inspiration for those adaptations comes from (and seeing how far some have deviated from the canon).
I definitely prefer ACD's short stories to the novellas. The short stories just have a better flow to them. The novellas all have good parts, but then they inevitably hit a point where I find my mind wandering as I’m trying to read. Specifically*
(show spoiler)in STUD** and the summations in SIGN and HOUN.
There is some (inevitable?) racism in the stories. There's some stereotype of Indian (from India) feet in an early story (maybe SIGN?). G***y gets thrown around quite a bit, and “red Indian” shows up maybe twice. Nothing too unexpected though.
My favorite short story was SCAN because I love Irene Adler. But also the story was tight, and the solution was clever. And my favorite novella was HOUN because it was atmospheric and engaging until the very end when it only dragged a little. On to Volume II!
*Not sure that's really a spoiler, but maybe it is so I'll tag it.
