Grasshopper on the Road
I don't remember reading any of Lobel's books as a child, but they're great to read as an adult too. I like how he doesn't hit you over the head with anything. Grasshopper meets all sorts of characters while he's on the road, and most of them are pretty ridiculous, but he leaves them all without judgement.
