The Change

The Change (Animorphs #13) - K.A. Applegate

I had a weird deja vu feeling reading this book. I know I read it once in college, but maybe I read it as a kid too. I can't quite remember. The beginning and the end are really familiar, but the middle, not so much.

OK, I like any book that reveals more about the main aliens in the series, so that aspect of this book was so great. The rest of it though... I just have a lot of questions. Which I will put under this cut. Spoilers for this and future books follow.

Why does Rachel morph Jara Hamee the first time? Ax should clearly be the one. He doesn’t have to demorph and remorph, and then there’s no chance Jara Hamee will know they’re humans.

I understand this is as they say, Tobias’s circus, but the ending makes NO SENSE. Yes, let Tobias come up with the plan. No, don’t let him be the one to implement it. He has his ability to morph back, but now is not the time to throw him into the fray. He has the least experience morphing. He’s recently morphed and demorphed. He should be exhausted.

The whole plan is crazy and none of this makes any sense. The Animorphs need air cover. Tobias is the best at that. But instead they put their eyes in the sky on the ground and let their least experienced morpher take on a new morph in a life or death situation.

Where is Ax at the end? Why didn’t Ax morph wolf instead of Jake? I mean, he went ahead with Cassie, I thought that's what he was doing but then there's no mention of him.

Why does Tobias need to acquire his human DNA? Does being trapped in morph wipe all the acquired DNA from your system? Does it also wipe your original DNA? Is this one of those weird morphing rules like being unable to acquire dead creatures (even though they still have DNA...)

I'm willing to forgive A LOT because I really like the Hork-Bajir and they get a lot of the story. I'm also feeling pretty forgiving because I just finished The Andalite Chronicles, and it was so good it compensates for the drop off in quality of the main series.
