I realized that The Forgotten (book 11), The Reaction (book 12) and The Change (book 13) were published in conjunction with the three parts of The Andalite Chronicles. That might explain the drop in quality over these three books (I haven't reread The Change yet, but I remember having at least one big question about the ending of that book).*
This is the most 90s Animorphs book yet. It's also filler. The reaction is interesting but has little to no bearing on the larger story being told here. There are also just a lot of questions I have which I'll discuss under the cut.
*All that said, I did reread this one a few times as a kid, and I remember the story pretty well.
Did no one find it weird that they found only one injured crocodile in the habitat even though all the witnesses probably saw two crocodiles fighting with each other?
Why did Rachel's mom go out to buy milk when there was milk in the fridge?
How did Visser Three acquire his new morph? Is he just taking little side trips on his off days from the secret human invasion?
Did Rachel go on and on about the hereth illint to Cassie and Jake or did she mention it in passing? Because in the space of about four paragraphs she supposedly does both... at least it's sort of covered why Cassie believes this lie when she sees through all of Rachel's other lies in this book.
