I find DiCamillo’s books disappointing. They read like shadows of the books I loved as a kid, always a little too derivative and not quite creative enough. The characters in Winn-Dixie are interesting but there are so many of them, and the book is so short there’s no time to develop their stories. Disappointing reread. Also very white (no one’s race is explicitly mentioned, so you can read the characters however you want. which I did, but since the default is white most people will read them as white/DiCamillo probably wrote them as white).
