Year of Impossible Goodbyes

Year of Impossible Goodbyes - Sook Nyul Choi

Decent if somewhat inconsistently written MG historical fiction.

It took me a while to get on board with the story but the ending really picks up. The very end felt rushed and left me unsatisfied even though I understood why the author ended the book the way she did.

The phrase almond-shaped/almond eyes is used a couple of times in the book but not in an annoying/exoticizing way.

ETA: My grandmother gave me this book (I'm not sure when, but I think it was recently, within five years?) with a note inside: "Alison being both Japanese & Korean you need to be aware of their history Ama" I kind of wish she were here so we could talk about it.
